Animals' and Birds' Ball Game

retold by Tim and Teria

A long time ago, the animals and the birds could talk.  They got mad at each other because they thought they were better than the other one.  So they decided to play a ball game to see who was the best.  They played in the Cherokee land.  Bear was the leader of the animals and Eagle was the leader of the birds.  Bear and Turtle showed what they would do to the birds if they tried to take the ball away from them.  Bear was throwing logs around.  Turtle was throwing rocks in the air and smushing them with his shell.

Two little ones came to the Eagle.  Eagle saw that they had four legs and said, “Go to the animals.”  One of them said, “We did, but the animals just laughed at us.”  Eagle felt sad for them so he let them join the team.  The birds thought hard how to make the little ones fly.  Then one of the birds used groundhog skin for one of the little ones.  They made wings and tied the wings onto the little one’s arms.  He became known as Bat.  The other one still could not fly.  They thought hard again, then one of them said, “We can stretch his skin.”  So two birds got on each side, grabbed his skin with their talons, and stretched.  Then he became known as Flying Squirrel.

The game began and Bat took the ball and kept it in the air.  Then he dropped it to Flying Squirrel, but Flying Squirrel missed it.  Rabbit got the ball next and ran to his goal, but he ran into Hummingbird, who poked him in the nose.  Rabbit’s nose turned pink, and the ball went flying across the ground.  Then Bat got the ball and dodged all the animals, even Deer.  Bat scored again.  Deer tried to get the ball, but Flying Squirrel got the ball, ran up a tree, then glided and passed the ball to Eagle, who scored another point.

Then Woodpecker grabbed the ball with his long bill and jerked his head while he let go of the ball.  He scored.  Then Martin got it and gave it to Bat who scored the last point.  The birds were excited because they had won.  The animals felt sad because they had lost.  The Bear and the Turtle, who bragged so much, didn’t even get to touch the ball.  The birds gave Martin a gourd.  Rabbit kept his pink nose.  Bat and the Flying squirrel got to keep their wings.
