Game Between Birds and Animals

retold by Sutaga, Shan, Clemente, Keith, and Ginger

Long ago, before people were here, the animals and the birds had a ball game. They played in the big tall grass by the river.

The bear said he was strong. "If anyone gets in my way, I will just bump him out of the way."

The big turtle said, "I will crush anyone who tries to get the ball."

Two little animals wanted to play in the game. The animals said they were too little. They felt sad and mad. They wanted to be in the game. They went to the captain of the birds. They told him they wanted to play.

The birds put wings on the little squirrel and bat. They used groundhog skin from the drum and put it on the bat to make him some wings to fly. They stretched the squirrel's skin so he could fly from tree to tree.

The bat caught the ball and flew in a zig zag line. The squirrel helped him.

Bear and turtle never even touched the ball. The animals never made one score. The birds made a bunch of them. The birds won the game.
