How the Deer Got Its Horns

retold by James, Tom, Clemente, Billy, Michael, Keith, Sutaga, Sheldon, Megan, and Jeannie

In the deep forest in the mountains, long ago, the animals were just alive and they could talk.

One day a rabbit and a deer were going to race. The deer and the rabbit were bragging all the time.

The animals got tired of listening to them.

The animals wanted to see who was faster. The winner of the race would get horns made of bones.

The rabbit cheated. He went into the bushes and made a trail. He came back with mud all over him.

Then the animals knew that he cheated because he had mud on his feet.  They got mad. They got so sore at the rabbit. They wanted to beat him up.

They didn't beat him up. They decided to give the deer the horns.

The rabbit had to live in the bushes for the rest of his life and for all generations.
