The Eagle's Revenge

Long ago in the Cherokee lands, a hunter traveled through the woods.  He listened to an eagle screeching.  He was stepping quietly.  He gazed at a deer out in the open.  He snuck up on the deer quietly on his moccasined feet.  He hid behind a bush.  He crept slowly, took his bow and drew his arrow back.

He let the arrow fly.  He shot the deer in the heart.  It staggered a couple of yards, then fell down.

The hunter carried the deer to the cabin and he hung it up in a tree so the wolves wouldn't get it.

He went inside.  He heard a noise.  He went outside and observed an eagle eating the deer. He went inside and got his bow and arrow.

He went back outside.  He pulled the arrow back slowly and shot the eagle in the side.

He went to the village and explained to the chief what he had done.  The chief was excited because the deer meat was saved for the people.  He sent some people back to get the eagle to prepare for an eagle dance.  The eagle dancers wore headdresses with feathers and feathers on their arms.

They stretched their arms and danced all around.  Seven rattlers shook turtle shell rattles with rocks inside.

A stranger appeared at the dance.  He had long black hair with a very large pointy nose.  He had a long thin tongue.  He only had 3 toes, pointed at the end. He also wore feathers on his arms.

The stranger told a story about him killing a man.  He shouted, "YIE!"  Six rattlers were left.  They were scared, so they shook their rattles louder.

The stranger yelled, “WOO!”  Another man with a rattle dropped dead. Five scared, shaking rattlers were left.

And he hollered again, "WOOHOO!"  Another man with a rattle dropped down dead.

Four rattlers were left.  They stared to plead, "Don't kill me!  Don't kill me!"  The stranger screamed, “YIOUE!”  Another rattler dropped dead.

There were three rattlers left.  They were very frightened.  They were about to jump out of their moccasins.  He called, “WOO WOOIOO!”  Another rattler fell dead.

There were two rattlers left.  They were very, very frightened.  Their mothers were also shaking by now.  The stranger cried, “YOO WIOO!”  And another rattler fell dead.

There was one rattler left.  He was terrified and accidentally dropped his rattle into the fire.  The turtle shell popped open and struck terror into his heart.

The stranger screeched, “YIHOO!”  And the last rattler fell dead.

The stranger took off into the darkness.  There was a whooshing noise.  They heard something land in a tree.  Then they heard an enhh, enhh sound.  A long time later, they learned that the stranger was the brother of the eagle that the hunter had shot.

We learned not to kill eagles.
