The Ice Man

Long ago there were Cherokee people who lived in a village in the mountains with their tribe.  In the fall they built a big fire to burn off the leaves and get the chestnuts and walnuts.  The fire caught on to a poplar tree.  Then the fire got too big and yellow and red and orange.  Flames, sparks, smoke, and ashes rose into the air.  The wood got too hot and

POPPED!

The fire went down into the roots and made a big hole in the ground.  The people were afraid the fire would suck up the whole village, the whole woods, and the whole world.

The chief sent messengers to the North Pole to get the Ice Man.  The Ice Man had long black braided hair (in four braids) that reached to the ground.  He looked smart.  He wore leather clothes to keep warm.  He unbraided his hair and hit his hand with it four times.  When he hit his hair on his hand the first time, the wind blew cold and windy.  He hit his hand the second time and it began to rain.  The third time he hit his hand it sleeted.  Then the fourth time he hit his hair on his hand it hailed.   The people believed in him.

“Go back to the village.  I’ll be there in two days.”

Two days later they felt a cold wind coming.  They knew it was the Ice Man.  When the Ice Man came and the fire was still going, the wind made the fire rise higher.  It started to rain.  That made the fire feel hotter.

After that it became a big rainstorm.  There was wind, lightning, and thunder.  The rain came sideways.  Sleet and hail mixed with the rain.  When it became huge, they were scared and ran into their houses.  The sleet and hail put the fire out.  It made a

SHSHSHSH  (sizzle).

The Ice Man went back to his house.  And when the fire went out they saw a lake and they could still hear the crackle of the fire.
