In a Cherokee Indian village, many years ago, two boys were out hunting. They found a sick snake on the path in the woods. He was so sick that you could see his bones and his scales were falling off.

One boy thought, "We should kill it."

The other boy thought, "We should take it home."

They took it home and fed it. The snake got better and better. He went around all the village and ate. The snake got really big.

The snake got so big that he took up the whole space in the house. He kept on growing. He got so big he took up the whole space in the village.

The snake tried to take over the Sacred Fire at their Celebration Dance. He wanted to dance too, so he knocked the people out of the way. He started going around in circles and he went faster and faster. He made a dust storm and about put out the fire.

The people got tired of him hogging up the fire. They sent four of their best men to shoot the snake, but the arrows bounced off.

Four boys came. They knew that the snake had four weak spots under his chin. The boys were so small they could go under his chin and shoot four arrows. They killed the snake.
