In the woods, many years ago, there was an old woman called Spearfinger. Every time she saw little kids, she called them to her and rubbed her fingers through their hair.  She got her bony old finger out and put it where the kid's liver was. She ate the liver. The kids got very weak and sick and then died.

She could turn into a family member and go in people's houses. When they were alone she jabbed them. You couldn't see a bruise or cut. But the people got weak and sick and died.

The people decided to kill her. That night they made a trap. It was a big hole. They covered leaves and sticks over it.

One day Spearfinger looked like one of her people. They didn't want to shoot her right away. She walked on the trap and fell in the hole. She changed form right away.

A bird came by and said, "Shoot at her heart." That bird told a fib and the people cut its tougue out.

The people started to shoot at her. She began to laugh. She started climbing up the side of the trap.

A chickadee flew down into the trap and sat on the bony finger. There was a lucky shot in the finger. That was the end of Spearfinger.
